Xander Steyn is a multi-talented individual and boasts experience as an actor, singer, dancer, director and choreographer. Xander Steyn is an artist in all facets – from fine arts to the performing arts. He has been singing, drawing and painting since he can remember and selling his art at markets in the small town he grew up in.
At the age of 16 he was part of the Watercolour Society of South Africa and took part in painting classes with the amazing artist Therésé Grunow. Since then he has explored all kinds of media in art. From charcoal to acrylic and pen.
Whilst performing in shows with his two talented sisters, Christine and Ansua at Arts Festivals he also exhibited his art at the Volksblad Arts Festival in 2003 and 2004 and was the best selling artist there.
Xander Steyn studied Architecture at UFS and later did his Honours and Masters degree at WITS in Johannesburg. Xander has no formal training in dance but this did not stop him. He was part of the group Karpos (an Evangilistic dance and drama group of UFS) and starred in productions like H2O, One Way (that toured Holland) and Sold Out.
Later that year he was a semi-finalist in the ATKV Crescendo and kykNET Zing competitions. In 2004 after moving to Johannesburg he did an ABBA corporate show in Cape Town and played leading roles in newly written Afrikaans musicals Krokketopia, Speel-Speel, Vere and Stasionêr.
2005 includes performances in Salon Music’s Chocolat and Mozart as well as choreography for the ATKV Lier Awards and the production Lappop Job. While doing his post-grad degree at WITS he did voice work for ABSA, PPS, Toyota and Vodacom. He was also the story-teller on Thabang Thabong on SABC2 and played the role of ‘Alan’ in the most popular soap in South Africa Generations on SABC1.
2006 he performed in My Fair Lady (Pretoria State Theatre), Janice Honeyman’s Aladdin, Peter Pan & Snow White, Fiddler on the Roof (Joburg Theatre) and he played Rocky in The Rocky Horror Show.
2008 he recorded an Afrikaans album with the beautiful and talented Nadia Beukes (presenter on kykNET, renowned actress, singer, writer and public speaker) as NX. Their single ‘Jakaranda Jaar’ was on the OFM playlist for over 8 years. Two of their music videos can still be seen on YouTube.
2009 Xander started his own design company ‘designX’. One of his best achievements was being an MC at the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Later that same year he also worked as a stylist for Miss South Africa in Sun City. Xander had the amazing opportunity to sing with the brilliant UK artist Imogen Heap. He was also in the top 15 men of So You Think You Can Dance on SABC1.
2011 he was one of the lead vocals in the show ‘What A Feeling’ at the Boma Theatre and in Deon Opperman’s Afrikaans musical ‘Tree Aan’. He was also part of the production ‘Houtkruis’ at the Sand du Plessis Theatre.
2012 he went abroad and started his own Musical Theatre program in Seoul, South Korea. He taught musical theatre to all ages and had contact with over 5000 Korean children. He directed and choreographed productions such as The Sound of Music, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and West Side Story.
2014 he moved back to South Africa and started his own production company (Xander Art Productions) that specialises in Musical Theatre and Art. The production ‘LIFE’ that was performed at the Gallery on Leviseur was directed, wrote, choreographed and performed by Xander. He also directed the show Best Of Broadway at the Sand du Plessis Theatre and did choreography for the Grey Music Festival and Arco’s A Symphonic Affair and Bling & Black Tie. Xander is also a performance coach and one of his students took part in a talent scouting competition in Florida, USA and was the only one signed by an internationally acclaimed agent from ‘The Bold and The Beautiful’.
Xander is also the creator of Hans Haas – a children’s theatre production that has had sold out shows at the Free State Arts Festival for the past 4 years. Since his return his return to Bloemfontein he has directed, choreographed and produced the following shows: The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mamma Mia, Grease, Frozen, Aladdin, Annie, Snow White & the 7 tsotsis, Robin in the Hood and Cinderella. He is currently working on the production ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with Caroline Grace that will be on stage 11 May 2019.
