Rita-Li is a name that is slowly making waves in the Afrikaans music industry.
They say that life experience is the fuel of some of the best artists, and Rita-Li has the experience to tell heartening South African stories to Afrikaans music lovers. From growing up on a cherry and dairy farm in the heart of the Eastern Free State and attending the reputed Sentraal High School in Bloemfontein to running her own physiotherapy practice in Pretoria for 10 years, Rita-Li knows how to create music which speaks to the full spectrum of life’s emotions.
Her first EP, Inkleurboek, released in 2018 has five varying tracks to illustrate her rich musical background. Rita-Li has had formal training in piano, flute, dance and vocals, including masterclasses with acclaimed songwriter and cabaret artist Gisela de Villiers for the last 13 years. ‘Genre’ is just a word for Rita-Li, as she seamlessly sashays between pop, Western classical, jazz, cabaret and more.
A collaboration with songwriter Johan Oberholzer, a gem in the crown of the Afrikaans music industry, brought about Rita-Li’s latest single, My Eerste, My Laaste – which went on to earn the title of Jacaranda FM’s Chamberlains Hot Hit in July, a week after its premiere. Her songs have been featured on various other radio charts, including that of Groot FM , Bok Radio and Bosveld Stereo.
There is a lot more to look forward to after Rita-Li’s EP and single, as she will be releasing a number of new singles in January, as well as a full album later in 2020.
Rita-Li is no longer ‘up-and-coming’; she has arrived and has carved the perfect place for herself in the Afrikaans music scene.
